Mount Marathon
The downtown area of Seward, Alaska is located at the base of this mountain. Mount Marathon is the name and it is the place of the second oldest foot race in the United States. The first race was in 1915 with only five runners and a handful of spectaters. Today thousands of people line the streets to cheer the over 800 runners that push themselves to the limit in an effort to run up the 3,000 foot mountain and then turn around and run back down.
Here is a different angle of Mt. Marathon. Can you believe that the record time for the race is 43 minutes, 23 seconds. WOW !! that record was set by Bill Spencer in 1981. The fastest woman to ever run the Mountain, finished at a blistering time of 50 minutes, 30 seconds in 1990. This photo was taken in the fall of 1998, from Nash rd, just outside the city limits.
